Typical Day for a Toddler, Preschooler, and Elementary Student
The goal for families who choose a Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Education is for their child to transition to a neighborhood school alongside peers with typical hearing and speaking skills. With that goal in mind, DePaul School works closely with the student’s family, home school district, teachers, speech therapists, audiologists, and other members of the team to create an educational plan and experience unique to each student’s needs.
For our preschool and elementary students, the day starts at 8:10am. Most students utilize transportation from their home district, but some parents drive their children to school. We have a parent room for family members and caregivers who drive long distances and need a place to relax or work while their child learns to listen and speak. Dismissal is at 3:15 pm on all days except Wednesday, which is at 1:00 pm.
DePaul School has its own criteria for cancellations and 2 hour delays. We do not follow any other school district. If a student’s home school district has a 2 hour delay or cancellation, they are excused from DePaul School. This is mostly because students are bussed in by their home districts and if that district has off school, the busses won’t run.

All students bring their own lunches, although DePaul School provides a breakfast, snack, and a lunch if a student forgets.
Each student is able to receive individualized support with small class sizes. Teachers of the Deaf design stimulating classroom activities to develop children’s listening, speech, language and pre-literacy skills.
Each child meets with a speech and language therapist once a day for intensive practice of their individualized therapy plan.
Including everything from conversational tips to social media habits and hearing device troubleshooting, our students learn to be their own best advocates at DePaul School and beyond!
